Phoenix

Information

Phoenixes are large birds of prey, native to desert and arid areas, having medium-long necks, and long tail feathers. Their red-gold plumage is covered in a slightly oily film which protects them from heat. The skin beneath their feathers is very dark in colour, almost black, and porous. When threatened, these creatures can emit a high octane, milky secretion from the pores in their skin which reacts with the oxygen in the atmosphere and combusts. The glands which produce this material are located mainly in the skin of the wings and underbelly of the creature. As a further defensive measure, the oily substance coating the feathers of the bird make it very toxic should an attacking creature ingest any part of it. Phoenixes are possessed of extraordinary vision and olfactory senses. Their daytime visual acuity is unsurpassed, though this suffers in dim light. Their sense of smell rivals that of vultures. When phoenixes die, their body bursts into flames. Once the body is consumed, a phoenix egg can be found nestled amongst the ashes. The deceased bird is believed to hatch anew from this egg. Phoenixes are social creatures, preferring to live in small flocks of four to ten animals rather than solitarily. A flock of phoenixes will control a huge territory. They will fiercely defend their territory against other aerial predators, anthing from eagles to dragons. Though many adult phoenixes are known to be pheasant-sized, their size is indeterminate, for they grow as long as they live, and being immortal creatures, it is possible for them to reach up to 12 feet from shoulder to tail.
